American Reading Company began its partnership with the AMETEK Foundation a decade ago, when the Foundation, which serves as the charitable arm of AMETEK, Inc., decided to bring the 100 Book Challenge reading program to the Binghamton City School District in New York. In addition to providing books, program materials, and reading milestone awards, AMETEK also called upon employees at its nearby aerospace instruments plant to volunteer as reading coaches on a weekly basis.
Over the course of the next ten years, AMETEK expanded its sponsorship support for 100 Book Challenge to schools across Binghamton, NY; Rochester, NY; West Chicago, IL; Nesquehoning, PA; and Burlington, NC. AMETEK, a manufacturer of electronic instruments and electromechanical devices, operates manufacturing plants at or near all of these communities. During the 2010-2011 school year, 3,390 students across 9 participating schools logged 472,983 hours of independent reading practice, an average of 140 hours per student.
